When my Brother was 5 and I was 20 I took him to Disneyland one rainy day.
He wouldn't ride anything. After standing in the rain for a few hours waiting for our friends to ride stuff I just had it with him. So I took him into the Mr. Toad line, he cried the whole time as I pulled him along. When it was our turn he grabed the rail while I pulled on him

the CM had to say "Miss are you going to ride" I said yes as I got DB to let go of the rail and I got him on the ride. I hugged

him on the ride and he hid his face the whole time. The thing is that broke what ever fear he had of the rides and after that he rode everything even the Matterhorn. He had so much fun the rest of the day. But even though it worked out it does seem mean now.
BTW I tried this with my DS8 on TOT a few weeks ago. He will ride everthing but TOT. I didn't make him ride it though the CM let him stay behind and brought him to us when the ride ended.

I would never spank my child either but...
I have had to gently force my DD now 6yo to go on Splash Mountain every trip.
She cries, I make her go on it and then she wants to ride 10 more times.

On Thunder Mountain she would want to go and we would stand in line the whole time and then get to the ride and she would cry not to go.
At that point I couldn't do a Parent-kid swap thing because the CM said you have to tell them at the beginning of the line.
So I stood in line and never got to go on either. The last trip I made her go on it.
She wasn't crying just whining a little and now it is her favorite ride.
And we rode it 6 times last trip.
She is going to be very disappointed that her two favorite rides, Thunder Mountain and Test Track will be closed on our trip next week.
But I'm sure we will find new favorites.

While I would never punish my child or force them on SCREAMING, sometimes pushing a whining child to go on a ride is not always a horrible thing.
