I have been in contact with this person by this name but his logon name was Kevinj_mouse75. So many red flags from this person! I asked his references if I could contact them from the site they rented from and never heard back from anyone.

I know I would personally pay to be a member here. One of the best parts of my day is reading stuff on here...and so far it seems I like most everyone here.
Unfortunately I think that if you made this a pay site you would lose valuable contributions from members who don't want to pay for a site, but that being said, making members who rent or want to rent pay a fee that could be used to verify both renters and rentors could be a valid consideration for Kim. I use all of my points so I don't rent them out and the only time I rented points was pre-purchase to see if I liked the DVC experience. I'm therefore not qualified to say what should be done, but I do think it would be nice to Kim to be compensated for some of the work she does to try to reduce the number of people who get scammed.

That being said, I will add my voice of thanks for being a great host Kim.

Hold on to your hats. More sophisticated scams are down the road.

Good on you for taking action and good luck. Iím surprised PayPal are doing anything though, they specifically say you cannot use them for timeshare transactions. I assumed that was their way to avoid having to act.

Maybe because it was PayPal credit not PayPal. I also filed a criminal complaint in his hometown. I plan to see this through!

Can you tell us how he scammed you? Are we allowed to ask that? Did he contact you when you placed a reservation wanted ad on Mouse Owners? Thanks.

Yes, he contacted me after I posted I was looking. He produced a dvc contract and screenshot of reservation without confirmation number on it. I am definitely seeing this through. I have rented points more than 10 times but this time, I got scammed. The good thing is I kept everything! Every message and email.

So after you paid him you found he did not have a confirmed reservation?

What is the best way for a renter to protect himself from this type of fraud? Do you the owners generally provide the confirmation numbers ?

I like it in my name in the MDE experience before I send money. But when I rented from my friend in U.K. it sat in my name in MDE for almost a month before the check cleared in U.K. it was booked at 11 months out so neither of us were worried. It does take an element of trust on both sides . But how do renters protect themselves from scammers ?

I am so sorry you were scammed. I hope we can all learn from your misfortune.
