I am looking to book a 2BR, hopefully Preferred view, one week. The SW race series is Friday-Sunday, April 17th - 19th. To do a race, you must be pickup your race stuff (Packet Pickup) at ESPN Zone at least the day prior.

So, we have to be there by Saturday, to run Sunday. We'd rather be there Friday and run Saturday, but the "Point Budget" was originally 520 points, + the 28 we'll bank as leftover from the 2019 trip.
Another option would be to book two studio rooms for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night (standard or preferred), then switch over to a preferred 2BR Monday. Do you plan to cook for yourself on race weekend? If it were me I'd book standard for a few days to know if I ever wanted to stay in one of those rooms again, and then relax.

And for the marathon the past 2 years, packet pickup was closing at 3pm, with it taking a long time to get from the airport to the hotel while certain roads were closed for the race. It's doable but you have to fly early and just get on the event bus.

So the dates your looking to book are Friday, April 17 - Friday, April 24, 2020.

Yes, I see your dilemma -- April 17 & 18 fall in Premier Season and then the rest of your dates April 19 - 24 fall in Magic Season.

Friday, April 17 = 100 points
Saturday, April 18 = 100 points
Sunday - Friday, April 19 - 24 = 350 points (5 nights x 70 points per night)
Total = 550 points (2 bdrm/preferred view)

There are ways to save on your points, if you don't mind moving (i.e. as pdude81 suggested), but if this were me, and you want a no-fuss, no-muss, to have my dates booked and be done with it, I'd just bank forward the 2019 points, and when you book the room in the system it will tell you that you're 30 points short and you will need to borrow and it will allow you to borrow at the time of booking -- bang -- you'll have your plans confirmed and you're done.

IMO, you have the points, you planned for this trip, and I honestly would not worry about it (if it were me). Unless you see some other unplanned trips or other types of trips in 2021 that cause you an issue on this strategy, I'd just bank, use my current UY points, and borrow the other 30 from my 2021 UY.

I personally dislike moving and avoid it all cost for various reasons. For me, I just want to settle in and enjoy my stay, I just don't want to monkey around with changing rooms unless I have no choice. If I have the points I book what I want, and enjoy the fact that I own the points to allow me to do so.

Good luck with your decision

The problem is that we have a 2 & 4 y/o, so we can't really split up. Studios may work in the future when everyone is a bit older, but for now not so much.

PP for the SW events runs all day, at least it has for every year so far. Also, since it's a much shorter course, and smaller field, they don't close the roads until a few hours prior. We haven't had any PP challenges yet.

That's really it: Do we bother w/the 10k next year, or stick to the 1/2 and fly in Sat? Is it worth it to save some points, and just get a standard room? Do we want to move, or should we just borrow some future year points?

Thanks for all of the info everyone, we'll be messing w/scenarios for the next week or so, 'til I actually book!!

For me, I don't mind borrowing if I have to. Plans change year-to-year and you will ebb and flow on borrowing and banking. IMO, for this trip, you have your plans and you have the points. Besides you'll learn quickly that most DVC members are always in the borrowing mode. You are in good company

Ok, so now that I understand the ages better, I have a different proposal for you. What cmrdgrs makes total sense, and if you just want to stay in your spot and enjoy your vacation then go for it.

But knowing how the sleep situation is set up there, I think you'd be fine in a studio with those ages for the first part of your trip. Now that may be a bit much if you're looking at having some privacy and space, so try this on for size:

1BR Preferred
Fri Apr 17 80
Sat Apr 18 80
Sun Apr 19 53
for a subtotal of 213

2BR Preferred
Mon Apr 20 70
Tues Apr 21 70
Wed Apr 22 70
Thurs Apr 23 70
for a subtotal of 280
and a grand total of 493

Then you get to see how you do with a 1BR size for your family before moving into the massive accomodations. 1BR will have only 1 shower but 2 tubs, and that could be important for getting the kids ready in a hurry at bedtime.

Now if it were me, I would be looking to stretch to day number 8 and get as many new data points figured out as possible, so I would try:

1BR Standard
Fri Apr 17 68
Sat Apr 18 68
Sun Apr 19 43
Mon Apr 20 43
for a subtotal of 222

2BR Preferred
Tues Apr 21 70
Wed Apr 22 70
Thurs Apr 23 70
Fri Apr 24 79
for a subtotal of 289
and a grand total of 511

At that point you also check the standard view to see if you care about that early in the trip when you are mostly racing and recovering and the crowds are higher, so you might not be hitting the parks as hard. The extra day in the smaller room makes it easier to afford one more day in WDW.

Again this isn't meant to disagree with any other opinions. I'm just sharing how I'd look at it based on the way my family vacations. We have one 4-year-old who loved the flip out beds at PVB and BWV, so we have had no desire yet to open up a couch to get another large bed. Thankfully at Riviera they have the big murphy bed and the flip bed is a twin, so everybody could have a good sized sleep space. We also tend to be out of the room the vast majority of the time, so I am less likely to spring for the extra space unless I'm looking for privacy or bringing extra guests.

I'd not move. We did that this year and will not again. Other trips I don't mind like I did during the race weekend.

I'd see it as a decision of not using as many points and going with the standard view or else just borrow the points and book the Premium view. As I said the race moves around and it won't always hit the higher point time. There's the flexibility with DVC that allows you to change what you're booking depending on how many points you have left! Or you can reduce the trip by a day or two one year. Or even do a day or two on cash.

Yeah, I dig it. I guess I was just bummed b/c I thought we'd perfectly calculated this add-on contract, and the FIRST time I tried to book w/it my math was way off.

I don't worry about borrowing every now and again, I worry about borrowing too many times in a row, and eventually getting to a point where a given year's trip suffers as a result.

You just learned the first rule of DVC - you never have enough points!

No seriously, don't be bummed at all, you bought a very nice amount of points that will give you lots of flexibility. I personally think borrowing a little is way better than under using your points. You could always book the first 6 nights of your stay w/your 2019/2020 Riviera points and book the last night in the 7 month window with the last of your 2020 points + one time UY points. A little risky, but I think you would get your last night in the 7 month window.

That's a good point. He's got those 28 2019 ccv points to burn in 2020

Yes, that's what I was thinking.

If the OP books Riviera April 17 - 23 = 480 (leaving 40 Riviera points left over from 2020)

The last night the OP needs to book (April 23) needs 70 points.

If the OP banks forward the 28 2019 CCV points that leaves him he could use the 2020 40 Riviera points + the banked 2019 28 CCV points + 2 one time use points (to avoid borrowing) = 70 points

The 2 OTU points = $38 (2 OTU points x $19)

Or he could flip it around and use his maximum OTU points 24 and 6 banked CCV points.
40 Riviera + 24 OTU points + 6 CCV banked points = 70 points

The 24 OTU points = $456 (24 OTU points x $19)

That helps the OP book his trip without moving at minimal cost using *OTU points.

(*Click link in red to see about OTU point rules)
