From watching that video, it appears that they've added what you might call a separate "lightning arrestor line" strung a couple feet above the haul rope. This seems to be heavily grounded. Like a "lightning rod" on a building. So this is looking to be Disney's solution to the threat of lightning. Not a common practice in typical ski lift situations.

best,

Real testing is now underway with actual guest gondolas. Under wraps (for protection).

While we were there this past weekend we were driving on one of the main roads (sorry cant recall the name) where the Skyliner goes over, and all of us in the car were commenting about how many car accidents are going to be caused by people looking at the skyliners while they are driving!

And you could have been the very first one! A missed opportunity. (thankfully!)

If Disney wants to make the Gondola system DEPENDABLE (which also increases the percentage of people who will want to use it) then they REALLY can't shut it down every time there is lightning within 15 miles. If they do that, then it will literally be shut down for at least a few hours, every day during the summer. Just not acceptable. Gondolas deal with lightning all the time. If properly built, they are pretty much Lightning Proof. However, it seems that Disney is going to go the second mile and install a secondary or even tertiary lightning arrest system. That is what that extra wire, above the gondola cables, is likely to be. Do everything they can to keep that lightning off the gondola cars.

We saw them in action too this past week while we were walking in to HS. They were covered in white paper/plastic/whatever but were cool to see.

They are definitely not going to be air conditioned but will use outside air flow to cool them some how. They also will not hold 16 more like 10.

The air conditioning part was from the original article. Confusing but there to show what was originally and incorrectly reported.

I also read that each gondola had eight seats that folded up to create standing room for 16.

It may have been reported in error. It seems quite unpleasant to be crowded that much and standing. I hope that it is not true.

I want to take the gondola to RR to eat at the rooftop restaurant.
