Default Being nice or being a pain

I'm a total believer in good karma and positivity. I went to Whispering Canyon Cafe with my whole family to celebrate my sister's graduation. My mean-spirited and grumpy Aunt decided she wanted nothing of it because the place was "too loud," "annoying," and "full of brats." She refused to stand up or participate in any of the fun antics. My sister was bummed because we love to have fun and do silly things at Disney! After all, it was to celebrate her graduation! And, the waiters were visibly embarrassed for us. When we left the hotel that night, grumpy accidentally shut her finger in the door of the car when getting in. She started to whine like a "brat" and refused to tip the valet even though he wasn't anywhere near the car when it happened. I was so mortified of my Aunt's behavior that I paid the valet a $10 tip and apologized up and down (I was only 20 at the time and not exactly rolling in money for valet, unlike my rich Aunt).
Needless to say, grumpy lost her new digital camera the next day and had to check out of their hotel early because she got sick and wanted to go home. I was kinda relieved that they didn't stick around to embarrass me and my sister anymore.
On the flip side of that story... I went to Disney alone last year and spent hours just walking around the parks and talking to CMs asking questions to bored looking CMs, asking for advice about new attractions, watching a candy making demonstration, looking around in different places, and just being a pleasant person. I didn't ask for anything, I promise! But for some reason, everyone I spoke to gave me something. At the end of the day, I had 3 fast passes, a free hand-drawn "Dale" with the artist's signature from Art of Animation, a free rice crispy treat, two free lollipops, a free coke, and a personal escort to first aid after I fell down the stairs walking into Fantasmic only to be escorted back to the show and given a front seat after I got a few bandaids.
CMs will never do anything malicious to you if you have a bad attitude - I think karma takes care of that. I'm sure they see enough "buttholes" to just keep on doing their job as normal without a wince. But, imagine how they feel if you are a nice person who might make them pass a few minutes a bit better. It doesn't hurt to be nice and have good manners on vacation.

I like your story Miss Pickles and agree with the morale. It made me think of the very rude mother last night on the observation deck at Cali Grill who was pushy, rude, and loud. Hope she gets her karma (I know - I'm supposed to think positively but this woman was NASTY!)

MissPickles-
I loved reading this. Thanks for sharing. It is amazing what a good attitude can do. I too am a believer in karma...what you put out into the world is what you will get back.

A great story and a good reminder for us all! When I lived in Chicago, any time I had to go to the dreaded DMV, I tried to remember how much harder it would be to work there than it was to stand in line for a few hours. I would try to smile and be pleasant and was often somehow mysteriously shown to the front of the line- without asking. People respond to pleasantness.

Happiness is a choice you make. Sometimes it takes work, but a positive outlook makes all the difference. Good story. Keep the good karma going.

was your aunt paying for the trip for everyone? it sorta sounds like it. perhaps you should cut the old girl some slack. your perspective as a very young person might be very different from hers. and, i really don't think a public anecdote about her is very nice, particularly if she was the reason you got to go to disneyworld in the first place.

I didn't get that impression from the OP. It sounded like she just didn't want to be there in the first place and was determined to not enjoy herself.

MissPickles - I'm glad you enjoyed your solo trip!!
